Happy Friday! Here are five things that should be on your radar: 1. Plug and Play accelerateAZ, a program of the ACA, hosted the Arizona Innovation Expo that celebrated the 2024 Venture Ready cohort startups and announced three corporate partners for the Sustainability Accelerator. Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, NSF Engines: Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE) and EPCOR will foster collaborations and support sustainability-focused startups participating in the Sustainability Accelerator. 2. Blue Polymers broke ground this week on a new recycled plastics production facility in Buckeye to support sustainable packaging manufacturing across the Western U.S. The 162,000-square-foot facility is expected to be operational in the second half of 2025 and will support more than 60 high-skilled jobs. 3. Terraline, an electric truck company focusing on freight transportation, plans to establish a new engineering headquarters in the Phoenix region, creating 30 new jobs. The company’s autonomous-ready 500+ mile, electric long-haul truck is designed to eliminate CO2 emissions and decarbonize freight fleets. 4. Maricopa Community Colleges was selected as one of seven institutions nationwide to receive an award through the NSTC Workforce Partner Alliance program, which was created by the CHIPS Act. The $1.7 million award will be used to expand semiconductor technician training offerings and launch the Maricopa Accelerated Semiconductor Training program. 5. The Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry in partnership with the Arizona Manufacturers Council is accepting nominations for The Hottest Thing Made in Arizona competition. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 1, and the winner will be announced at the 2024 Manufacturing Workforce Summit on October 23. New Federal R&D Funding Opportunities Department of Commerce Weather Program Office Research ProgramsThe Weather Program Office seeks to support new weather, water, and earth system observing and forecasting applications. There are multiple opportunities available: VORTEX (NOAA-OAR-WPO-2025-28596) – improve the effectiveness of tornado forecasts and warnings. The program is intended to have the maximum possible near-term societal benefit by reducing the impacts of tornadoes. Four to five awards are expected of up to $500,000 each. Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) (NOAA-OAR-WPO-2025-28599) – address a spectrum of issues on the subseasonal to seasonal time frame at various stages of research readiness. Specifically, projects that have the potential to improve S2S forecast capabilities will be considered. Four to five awards are expected of up to $350,000 each. New Foundation R&D Funding Opportunities BrightFocus FoundationGlaucoma ResearchThe BrightFocus Foundation seeks to provide funding for research that leads to greater understanding, prevention, and treatment of glaucoma. There are two opportunities available:Standard Awards: Grants of up to $200,000 over two years will be awarded to researchers who have already generated some preliminary data but are often required to demonstrate additional, significant progress before applying to governmental or industrial funding agencies.
