Arizona man in custody after shooting, injuring State Police officer during traffic stop

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A  State Police Officer was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after being involved in a shooting Saturday.

According to NMSP, an officer patrolling I-40 initiated a traffic stop on a GMC pickup at mile marker 130  near Laguna. The driver of the pickup was later identified as 28-year-old Robert Benjamin Nelson of Scottsdale, Arizona. 

When the officer made her initial approach toward the vehicle, Nelson reportedly fired multiple shots at her head. The officer able to recover and return fire after being struck.

The suspect fled the scene eastbound on I-40. Despite her injuries, the officer returned to her vehicle and gave chase.
