Mescalero Apache Tribe on lockdown after COVID-19 spike reported on reservation

President of the Mescalero Apache Tribe Gabe Aguilar announced that all tribal members are on lockdown after a spike in COVID-19 hit the reservation near Ruidoso.

Aguilar announced that the Inn of the Mountain Gods and the Travel Center on Highway 70 would be closed until further notice, via social media on July 22.

The reservation will be on lockdown for 14 days beginning at 5 p.m., Friday, July 24 and will end on August 7.

On July 21 the reservation had 10 positive cases, and on July 22 it received notice that an additional 14 positive cases were confirmed.

“Not all the cases are from the casino, they are from different places. That is a lot of cases with different tribal members,” said Aguilar. “We have to do something to slow the virus down. It is moving and it is running. We are going into a lockdown as a tribe.”
