Hopi health workers struggle to rebuild trust after the chaos of fraudulent rehab scams

KYKOTSMOVI — Outside the Hopi Substance Abuse Prevention Center, a sun-warped placard offers a hopeful message: “Healing begins with you.”

The sign is at the end of a dirt driveway leading up to the center. Rustic and homey, invisible on Google Maps, it sits on the southeast fringe of Kykotsmovi Village, a sparse collection of houses nestled at the foot of Third Mesa. In every direction, the low tan scrub of the Hopi reservation stretches for miles.
