Open Summer School Programs

May 15, 2024

As a parent and scientist from the Hopi Nation, I am acutely aware of the challenges our youth face in pursuing higher education. The transition from high school to college can be daunting, especially for those from underrepresented backgrounds like ours. However, I firmly believe that participating in summer college immersion programs after graduating from high school is not just beneficial but crucial for the academic and personal development of our youth.

Summer college immersion programs offer an invaluable opportunity for recent high school graduates to experience college life firsthand. These programs provide a taste of academic rigor, exposure to diverse fields of study, and the chance to explore potential career paths. Importantly, they also help students navigate the social and cultural aspects of college, easing the transition to higher education.

For Hopi students, attending summer college immersion programs can be particularly transformative. By immersing themselves in a college environment, they gain confidence, expand their horizons, and develop essential skills for success in higher education and beyond. Moreover, participating in these programs can empower our youth to become leaders and role models within our community, inspiring future generations to pursue their educational aspirations.

Fortunately, there are several summer college immersion programs still open for enrollment, offering opportunities for our Hopi students who are graduating in the coming week(s) to embark on their college journey:

  1. Arizona State University – Digital Culture Summer Institute
  2. Fordham University – Summer Leaders Academy
  3. iD Tech

These are just a few examples of the many summer college immersion programs available to Hopi high school graduates. Each program offers a unique experience, but all share the common goal of empowering students to reach their full potential. As a parent and scientist, I urge our community to support and encourage our youth to seize these opportunities and embark on their educational journey with confidence and determination. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for the Hopi Nation.

Please encourage your students to attend one of these summer programs. if you have any recommendations for summer programs which are still accepting applications, please feel free to email us at Admin@HopiTimes.com and we will be sure to share with our readers. Askwali/Kwa’kway
